=Penang= Wine Pairing Dinner @ The View, Equatorial Hotel Penang

The View at Hotel Equatorial Penang is a French fine-dine restaurant that will occasionally host a Wine Pairing Dinner, and Gibson was invited to attend the wine-pairing event recently, and the event was in collaboration with the popular Chilean wine-labels in Malaysia, the Luis Felipe Edwards and The Wine Shop.

Gibson loves Chilean wine, because of its smoothness with a surprise kick, and the 5-course dinner at the View really paired well with the wine. The wines for the night were Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc, Luis Felipe Edwards Reserve Gewurztraminer, Luis Felipe Edwards Marea De Leyda Pinot Noir, Luis Feliepe Edwards 900 Blend and the Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva Late Harvest.

This one-off event for the night costs RM288 nett per person and all the wines of the night were handpicked by LFE's wine ambassador Mr. Nick Tullet.

Luis Felipe Edwards' (LFE) estate that is located in the Colchagua Valley, Chile, was the supplier of good quality wine grapes to the wine manufacturer since 1976, and only since 20 years ago, they decided to produce their own wine. Today, their label can be found in more than 90 countries across the globe, and they entered Malaysia in October 2011, which is now the largest supplier of Chilean Wines in Malaysia.

Luis Felipe Edwards 900 Blend is one of their signature wine, which derives its name from the 900 meter above sea level location of the vineyard, and it is also amongst the highest in the Chile. 900 blend is a blend of Syrah, Petite Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot and Malbec, which turned out quite fruity with a touch of berries.

Prior to fine dining, we were served with delicious finger foods, which was a good start for the night.

The bread is good too.。

Crabmeat and Avocado Salad with roasted Capsicum Coulis and Micro Greens
Paired with LFE Gran Reserva Family Selection Sauvignon Blanc

The dinner started with 3 courses of Amuse Bouche, which the Crabmeat and Avocado Salad really prepared our palate for the night, and the wine turned out sweet when paired with the salad.

Escargot ragout with fried eggplant
Paired with LFE Reserva Gewurztraminer

The eggplant was a bit bland in taste as well as presentation, maybe this is to compliment the smooth and lightness of the wine, though the wine was quite zesty at the end.

Seafood risotto with mushrooms
Paired with LFE Marea De Leyda Pinot Noir

The risotto was not cooked al dente, which was soft to our liking, and the strong seafood flavour really complimented the whole dish well, while the baked cheese added the crunchiness to create more textures to the dish.

Palate Cleanser- Spicy Papaya Seed Sherbet
A spicy sherbet but not chili hot, Gibson later discovered from the kitchen that the spiciness was actually from the seed itself, how interesting.

Pan-seared Black Angus Beef Rossini Brussels Sprout Puree and Confit Potatoes with Port Wine Glaze
Paired with Luis Felipe Edwards 900 Blend

The entrée was medium rare Black Angus and topped with a piece of well-prepared Foie Gras that complimented the beef well. Then paired with the highlight of the night, the 900 Blend, an amazing outcome where the “berriness” enhanced the flavour of the dish.

Passion Fruit Tart accompanied with Lime Sherbet, Raspberry Coulis and Vanilla Hazelnut
Paired with Reserva Late Harvest

The finale was a bit of the twist where the sweet wine was paired with the sour dessert. Gibson liked the dessert more than the wine, because the sweetness of the wine can be too overwhelming.
