=Penang= Poon Choy @ Hakka Tree

There are too many “Poon Choy” in the market, and somehow Gibson prefers the simple but nice, not the overwhelming type of “Poon Choy”, which there is a restaurant in Penang that serves the “Poon Choy” with a clear soup base, and the soup is cooked with pork knuckles, scallops and oysters. In this way, all the ingredients managed to retain their distinctive flavour without overpowering one from the other. If you are wondering, the restaurant is Hakka Tree and is located at Tesco Tanjung Tokong & Gurney Plaza.

“Poon Choy” became popular as a Chinese New Year dish due to its form of presentation that consists mostly of expensive ingredients, which is the symbol of fortune and prosperity. However, due to at least 3 layers of ingredients and to cook all these rich ingredients in one pot may result in an overpowering of taste, it is not an easy task to plan to cook the dish.

However, Hakka Tree served the dish without an overpowering gravy, where they do not offer any fancy clay pot package, while requiring at least 2 days in advance booking. Besides that you need to prepare your own container if you plan to take away, and all these troubles just to make sure they can cook you a nice pot of “Poon Choy”, which you get to taste the flavour and best of the ingredients.

Just like the rest in the market, you get to eat more than 10 ingredients in this “Poon Choy”, where the top layer consists of Chile Abalones, New Zealand Scallops, Prawns, Preserved Oysters, Golden Bags (Similar to Fried Wantan), Mushrooms, Australia Sea Cucumbers and broccolis. The second layer consists of Pork Tendon Ball and Deep-Fried Foo Chuk and the third layer is made of white radish, yam and pork knuckles.

This 'Poon Choy' is priced at RM328 for 6-8 pax with a gift of 5 x RM30 vouchers, which can be redeemed when spending more than RM50 while combined vouchers are not allowed and it is valid until April this year.

They also provide “YeeSang”, which priced at RM38 (2-3 pax) / RM66 (6-8 pax) that is served with a confetti of vegetables, jellyfish and salmon slices with fruity sweet sauce and condiments in the Yee Sang platter.

Promotion Period valid from 15/1/2017 to 6/2/2017.
